Preschool is an exciting and transformative time for young children. It provides an environment for children to grow, learn and develop important social, emotional and cognitive skills. Sending your child to preschool can be a big step for both you and your child, so it's important to understand what your child will learn and what to expect from a typical day.

Different Experiences

At preschool, children will engage in a variety of activities designed to stimulate their minds and develop their skills. These activities may include playing with toys, drawing and colouring, listening to stories, singing songs and participating in group activities. Through these experiences, children will learn important skills such as sharing, cooperation and problem-solving.

Cognitive Development

Preschool focuses on cognitive development by allowing children to learn basic concepts such as numbers, letters, shapes and colours. They will also be introduced to early literacy skills, such as recognising letters and sounds, and begin to develop early reading and writing skills. Children will also engage in hands-on activities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, such as sorting, counting and classifying objects.

Physical Activity

Preschool also places a strong emphasis on physical development. Children will participate in activities that encourage physical activity and coordination, such as running, jumping and playing with balls. These activities help children build strength, coordination and motor skills.

Independence

In addition to these structured activities, preschool also provides opportunities for free play. Free play allows children to use their imaginations and engage in independent exploration and discovery. It's also a time for children to practice their social skills and work out conflicts with their peers.

So what can you expect from a typical day at preschool?

Welcoming Routine

Most preschool programs run for a few hours a day, usually in the morning or afternoon. Upon arrival, children will engage in greetings and welcome activities, such as singing a song or playing with a specific toy. This helps children feel comfortable and welcomed in their new environment.

Structured Activities

Next, children will participate in structured activities, such as circle time, where they will listen to stories, sing songs and engage in group activities. Following structured activities, children will have free play time when they can explore and play with toys and materials on their own.

Snacks

After free play, children will participate in snack time, where they will learn healthy eating habits and socialise with their peers. This is also a good time for children to practice their fine motor skills, such as using utensils to eat.

Further Planned Exercises

Following snack time, children will participate in more structured activities, such as arts and crafts or outdoor play. At the end of the day, children will participate in closing activities, such as singing a goodbye song or saying a closing rhyme, before being picked up by a parent or caregiver.

Preschool is a wonderful time for children to grow and develop important skills. Children will engage in activities that encourage social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. A typical day at preschool will include structured activities, free play, snack time and closing activities. By sending your child to preschool, you are providing them with a supportive and stimulating environment that will help them reach their full potential.
